Maria Yolanda Liebana's Exhibition Features Maximalist, Mixed-Media Paintings

The George Segal Gallery at Montclair State University is hosting the first institutional solo exhibition of New York-based artist Maria Yolanda Liebana, titled "A Place to Be Held."

The exhibition showcases Liebana's maximalist, mixed-media paintings, which blend tarot, pop culture, and personal narrative. Her works are characterized by vibrant, fantastical imagery, often depicting an Eden-like garden filled with rainbows, flowers, clouds, and cosmic elements.

Liebana incorporates a diverse range of materials, including wallpaper, mirror tiles, pearls, glitter, disco balls, sequins, and rhinestones, to create luminous and playful compositions. These works also reference Catholicism and ancient mythologies through symbols like chalices and cherubs.

As a first-generation Latinx immigrant, Liebana explores themes of selfhood and inheritance. The birth of her daughter inspired a series focusing on motherhood as a terrain of labor, wonder, and transformation.

The paintings feature confident, empowered women engaged in activities like dancing and reclining, symbolizing universal feminine dominion and strength.

"A Place to Be Held" runs from September 15 through December 11 in Montclair, New Jersey.
