Bugaboo pram concept uses orange peel and egg cartons

Students at Aalto University in Finland collaborated with Bugaboo to create a concept stroller using biodegradable, bio-based materials.

The project aimed to translate biomaterial innovations into a functional product. The resulting stroller features a classic Bugaboo frame but with biodegradable materials for its seat cover, canopy, and cushioning.

Waste orange peel was processed into a material for the canopy, emitting a subtle citrus scent. The seat cover, made from plant-based leather, was coated in tar for water resistance, though achieving full waterproofing with biomaterials remains a challenge.

Sawdust and methyl cellulose form the back panel, while starch-based foam and recycled fiber foam from egg cartons provide cushioning for the seat.

A hemp and lignin-based biolace blanket covers the seat. Product labels are also cellulose-based.

The concept model was developed in Aalto University's Chemarts laboratory. Lecturers noted that collaborating with Bugaboo provided students with real-world design and engineering context.

While currently a concept, the project highlights experimental materials like those previously showcased by Aalto University, including yarn from salvaged 300-year-old wood.
